The public prosecutor’s office has demanded 300 years in prison for 63 anarchists accused of ravaging and looting for the May 7, 2016 demonstration against the anti-immigration wall that the Austrian government intended to build on the border with Italy.

This was one of two hearings in the Bolzano prosecutor’s case against some 130 anarchists. The demands range from one year and a few months to a maximum of ten years each.

Further hearings will now follow, reserved for defence and responses, before the verdict comes in the coming weeks. For the occasion, the prosecutor decided to reinforce the collective crime of “devastation and looting”, despite the damage estimated after the demonstration at about eight thousand euros, very little for a type of crime intended for war events like the looting of a city by an army. No private individual was harmed, not even the railroad, nor did they form a group to claim any damage. On the other hand, the Ministry of the Interior and some police officers who supposedly suffered injuries ran to form a civil group to claim financial compensation.

It is clear that this is a new repressive operation aimed to attack social movements of opposition and those who actively oppose the government’s racist policies.
