Solidarity action at Free Derry Wall for Patxi Ruiz who is currently on hunger strike: Saturday 23rd May at 12.30pm
Basque Political Prisoner Patxi Ruiz is now 12 days on Hunger and Thirst Strike against ongoing mistreatment.
Patxi has been punished by screws for the past 10 years for his stand for prisoners rights. Now during the Covid lock down he along with other prisoners have staged protest in the prison court to demand prisoners rights, including the immediate release of those prisoners who are ill and those who have spent most of their sentence. And now in this struggle he is putting his own life at risk issuing a list of 5 demands:
1 Taking into account the treatment he has suffered during these years and, especially, the one he is receiving in the Murcia II prison, Patxi demands that the prison assume the responsibility he has in this situation and that the safety of his physical integrity is guaranteed .
2. Denounce and suspend the attitude maintained by the Director, the doctor and the screws, that’s to say, the end of threats, beatings and insults.
3. He makes it clear that his fight is political and makes it a condition for leaving alive to be transferred to the Basque Country, and along with him, also the rest of the Basque political prisoners
4. That all political prisoners who are not from the Basque country be as close as possible to their places of residence.
5. Along with these demands, Patxi wants to extend his appreciation and thanks to all the people who have agitated in the Basque country and beyond and have supported him.
In response to the seriousness of the situation, social justice activists locally are hoisting a solidarity vigil this Saturday, May 23rd at 12.30pm, Free Derry Wall.
