Justice for the Craigavon Two: Brendan McConville and John Paul Wootton were convicted for the killing of a PSNI Officer in the North of Ireland in 2012. The case has been supported as a miscarriage of justice by high profile campaigners, legal experts & human rights activists. The prosecution used discredited witnesses, inconclusive forensics, and tampered evidence to secure a conviction that does not stand up to scrutiny. Security services destroyed evidence, intimidated witnesses and defence lawyers.

Kevan Thakrar: wrongly convicted of murder and attempted murder in 2008 using multiple hearsay evidence under ‘joint enterprise’, the legal rule which means that any member of a group can be convicted of a crime, regardless of whether they played any role in it. Kevan wasn’t present when the murder took place, but he was sentenced to life with a minimum of 35 years in jail. He was aged just 20.

Yusef Asad: unjustly sentenced to two and a half years in Prison for defending himself from racists attacking a Palestine March in Cardiff in July 2014. He received the heaviest sentence despite only responding as racists at a pub started the violence throwing bottles, glasses and chairs at the demonstrators, who included young families.

Brest Anti-fascists Arrests: Late on the evening of May 8, 2014, in Brest, Belarus a fight between anti-fascists and neo-Nazis took place. The reason for the fight was a nazi provocation. One of the nazi began raising his hand in Roman salute and shouting “Zieg Heil” and “White Power”. Except that the anti-fascists were better skilled in fighting, so one of the nazis ended up hospitalised. In October 2015 Antifascists were tried under the art. 339.3 (malicious group hooliganism) and 147.2 (malicious bodily harm). The case was qualified as malicious due to the fact of pepper spray usage in the fight. Dzmitry Stsyashenka got 5 years of penal colony with reinforced regime (339.3) and 500 euro of damages to be paid to the injured nazis. Roman Bogdan got 8 years of penal colony with reinforced regime (339.3, 147.2) and 3500 euro of damages to be paid to the injured nazis. Another antifascist (full name not disclosed) got 5 years of penal colony with reinforced regime (339.3) and 500 euro of damages to be paid to the injured nazis. It should be pointed out that in 2014 Dzmitry Zvan’ko was sentenced to 5 years of prison for the same account. Dzmitry Stsyashenka is serving another sentence of 4 years at the moment.
UPDATE DECEMBER 2015: On December 15 a regional appellate court have commuted the sentence of two Brest antifascists, convicted on charges of participating in a mass fight with neonazis that took place on May 8, 2013. The new sentence of Dzmitry Stsyashenka is 3 years and of Roman Bogdan – 6 years of penal colony. The sentence was commuted by two years for each prisoner, most probably because they had paid the damage to the injured neonazi (all in all about 3500 euros). Almost half of it was paid by their relatives. Maxim Yahnieshka: an antifascist from Grodno. On September 7 he was sentenced to 3 years of custodial restraint for a fight with right-wing hooligans (art. 186 Threat of homicide, malicious bodily harm or property destruction) and for robbing another hooligan of his hat (art. 206.2 Robbery with threat of violence + art. 339.1 Hooliganism).
It all started on April 1, 2015, when Maxim got beaten up by a right-wing gang so hard, that he had to call the ambulance. Doctors saw multiple bodily injuries and called cops. Cops wanted to start a case on the account, trying to make Maxim make a statement against the perpetrators, but when he refused, they found the hooligans using surveillance cameras and made then accuse Maxim of other conflicts that happened before. Maxim changed his status from a victim to the accused.
On November 17, 2016 the higher court ruled to leave the sentence unchanged.

Vlad Lenko: Arrested for a fight with neo nazis in December 2014. Vlad, an Anti-fascist from Ivatsevichy, is charged under Art 339.2 (Hooliganism in a group of people.) and 147.2 (Causing grievous bodily harm.) The court sentenced Vlad to a six year period of imprisonment in a maximum security colony. a large amount of money is needed to appeal the verdict, as it stays hopeful that the sentence can be reduced by half. Money is also needed to aid him in paying off the ordered compensation of €1000 to the victim.

Valentin: accused of having taken part in the violent clashes at „Verdener Eck“ after the football match between SV Werder Bremen and the HSV. That day Nazi Hooligans from Bremen attacked a group of antifascist Ultras. The clash ended in violent confrontations between the two groups. Even though the events took place after a football match, and football fans are affected, this is not about football riots! The altercation had a political background. The hooligans attacked the Ultras since they believed them to be left winged antifascists. Since his arrest Valentin is in custody awaiting trial. At a press conference on July 2nd the police presented him to be the „prime suspect“ in the case. He is accused of aggravated battery and severe breach of the peace (schwerer Landfriedensbruch). The police made clear that Valentin is going to be held as an example against political violence.

Giorgos Karagiannidis and Alexandros Mitrousias: They deny being members of the Cells of Fire. Giorgos and Alexandros were both tried in the so-called “Halandri case” and sentenced to 20 years and 11 years in prison respectively. They are currently on trial for the “Nea Smyrni case” (on charges of forming an “unnamed terrorist organisation”) and are facing further Cells of Fire-related charges. Nikos Romanos, Andreas Bourzoukos, Giannis Mihailidis, Dimitris Politis, Foivos Harisis and Argyris Dalios: Nikos, Andreas, Giannis and Dimitris were arrested after a car chase on 01/02/2013 after the double robbery at a branch on National Post office and at a branch of Agriculture Bank, in Venvento, Kozani. Foivos Ηarisis and Argyrhs Dalios were arrested on 20/04/2013 in Nea Filadelphia, Athens and are also accused for the robbery. All six are also accused of being members of CCF, something that both they and CCF deny. The comrades were sentenced for committing the double robbery but were acquitted of participarion in the CCF. Spyros Mandylas: a member of Anarchist Squat Nadir, in Thessaloniki. He was arrested in 11/07/2013 and he was initially prosecuted for all acts of the “Phoenix” Project, that happened in Greece but now he faces charges only for the 4th act and for allegedly being part of the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire. He has been released after the end of the 18-month pre-trial detention that was imposed om him concerning the “Phoenix” project case but he was arrested again on 10/03/2015 after his sentencing (without him being present in the trial) to 7 years of imprisonment and a 5.000 euro fine about the case “Thessaloniki squats” which concerns some ruptures within anarcist circles of Thessaloniki in 2012. Tasos Theofilou: Anarchist communist Tasos Theofilou has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in connection with an armed robbery in Paros on 10/8/2012 during which a taxi driver, Dimitri Micha, was killed. He was found guilty of two felony charges: participating in a robbery with his physical characteristics covered, and being an abettor in manslaughter committed in a calm mental state. He was also convicted of three misdemeanors: carrying a firearm, forgery (accusation relating to vehicles of the robbers), and accepting the proceeds of crime (the getaway car of the robbers). However, he was found not guilty of membership of a terrorist organisation (namemly C.C.F.), possession of explosives and ordnance, forgery of five identification cards, use of a firearm, and two attempted homicides. The verdicts were based solely on a single piece of ‘evidence’, DNA from a hair allegedly found on a hat that had supposedly been dropped by the fleeing robbers. None of the eye witnesses recognised Theofilou and the court itself found that he was not a member of the organisation that prosecutors accused of having been involved in the robbery i.e. C.C.F.. Nicola Gai and Alfredo Cospito: arrested on 14th September 2012 and accused of shooting of Roberto Adinolfi, CEO of the nuclear energy company Ansaldo Nucleare, in the knees – an action carried out by Olga/FAI/FRI nucleus on 7th May 2012. During their first trial on October 30, 2013, they admitted their part in the shooting but were prevented from reading out their statements on their behalf. At their sentencing hearing on November 12 2013, Alfredo was given ten years and 8 months in prison and Nicola 9 years and 4 months for attack with the purpose of terrorism (under article 280 of the Italian penal code), in addition to reato ostativo (impediment of access to prison benefits, house arrest, semi-custodial regime, etc. given that terrorist purposes were recognized by the court). In early May 2015, the Supreme Court decided to reduce the sentences of comrades Alfredo Cospito and Nicola Gai. The final sentences are: Alfredo Cospito: 9 years, 5 months and 10 days (from 10 years and 8 months) Nicola Gai: 8 years, 8 months, 20 days (from 9 years and 4 months).

Operation Piñata: Early afternoon on Wednesday 1st April, the judge of the Audiencia Nacional National High Court Eloy Velasco, remanded in prison 5 of the 15 individuals arrested on Monday 30th March during the police operation named Piñata. 24 others were arrested during the 17 raids, which took place in Madrid, Barcelona, Palencia and Granada, for “disobedience and resistance”, who were then subsequently released.

Joel Almgren: sentenced to 5 years and 6 months for defending a local community-organized anti-racist demonstration in the Kärrtorp area of Stockholm against a brutal nazi-attack on the 15th of December 2013. Locals of all sorts, including parents with their children, elderly and youth, gathered in their neighbourhood to show strength against a nazi organisation that had been attacking local anti-racists and spreading nazi propaganda in schools in the area. They gathered in a peaceful protest when they were attacked by the most militant nazi group in Sweden with knives, sticks and glass bottles. Anti-fascists at the scene defended the local families from the attack and were injured themselves. One of the anti-fascists got arrested by the police a few days later altough the anti-fascists did nothing but defend themselves.

SWITZERLAND
Marco Camenisch: continuously incarcerated in Italy and Switzerland since 1991. Marco is an unrepentant green-anarchist revolutionary who has a history of political activism dating back to the 1970s. He was first detained in Switzerland in 1980 for sabotaging an electricity pylon and a power station but managed to escape from custody in 1981. After years on the run he was arrested in 1991 in Italy at a security checkpoint. He remained imprisoned in Italy until 2002. He was convicted among other things for militant direct actions against high voltage power lines. After finishing his sentence in Italy he was then extradited to Switzerland to finish the remainder of his original sentence. He was also convicted and sentenced for the murder of a Swiss border guard in 2002. Marco has repeatedly maintained his innocence of this charge.

Osman Evcan: an anarchist prisoner who spent his last 23 years in prison. İn 1992 he was sentenced to 30 years in prison with the charges of being a member of a leftist terrorist group and robbery. He was also imprisoned for 9 years between 1980-1989. Since Osman adopted anarchist ideas in 2003, he also became vegan and supports animal liberation struggles. Osman Evcan is still in Kocaeli no 1 high security prison. The pressure against him continues to increase. After his hunger strike for 33 days on June 2015 he took vegan food supplies one step further and he gained the right to get vegan food from outside the prisons. The prison administration usurped this gain due to arbitrarily reasons. Osman Evcan continues his indefinite hunger strike since 10 November 2015.

Abdul Haqq: arrested by federal agents after his brother informed on him, Walter was sentenced on 11th Feb 2011 for burning down the Sheepskin Factory in Glendale, Colorado. On 14th Oct 2011, Walter was sentenced to a further 87 months in prison for the ALF arsons in Utah. This new sentencing will run consecutive with his time in Colorado. Abdullah Majid: imprisoned for more than three decades. In the 1960s, Abdul worked in the Grassroots Advisory Council – an anti-poverty program – before joining the Black Panther Party (BPP), and then became a citizen of the Republic of New Afrika. Abdul was involved in many of the BPP’s community-based survival programs which included free health clinics, free breakfast for children, the fight to decentralize the NYC public schools and NYPD. For this reason, he was targeted by the FBI’s Cointelpro – counterintelligence – program, charged and convicted of murder and the attempted murder of a police officer. Abdul and his co-defendant, Basheer Hameed, were forced into three separate trials. The first trial ended in a hung jury – divided along racial lines; the second trial was declared a mistrial by the judge immediately after the jury acquitted Basheer of the murder charge; both were finally convicted in a third trial. Alvaro Luna Hernandez: a community organiser from Texas. Police informants were used to monitor Alvaro’s organising activities in the barrio. They were told Alvaro was “typing legal papers,” “had many books” and was working on police brutality cases in Alpine. Alvaro was recognised nationally and internationally for his human rights work. He was sentenced in Texas on 9 June 1997 to 50 years in prison for defending himself by disarming a police officer who drew a weapon on him. The trial evidence indicated that Alvaro was the victim of witch-hunts and a police-orchestrated conspiracy to frame or eliminate him.

Bill Dunne: arrested in 1979 when he and Larry Giddings attempted to free fellow revolutionary Artie Ray Dufur. The two successfully freed Artie, but were arrested after an exchange of fire with police as they were fleeing the scene. Bill and Larry were charged with auto theft and aiding and abetting the escape, for which Bill received an 80-year federal prison sentence. In 1983, Bill attempted to escape prison and was sentenced to a further 15 years in prison. Bill spent seven and a half years in lockdown at the infamous maximum security Marion prison for his attempted prison break.

Brian McCarvill: a radical social prisoner who successfully brought a lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Corrections, along with former political prisoner Robert Thaxton, challenging their censorship and rejection of anarchist publications. The lawsuit alleged that ODOC frequently censored radical materials (simply on the basis that they portrayed the Anarchist circle-A symbol, the Anarchist Black Cross symbol, the Anarchist Black Flag, and the terms “Anarchism” and “Anarchist”. Dallas 6: After guards tortured fellow prisoner Isaac Sanchez in the torture chair overnight and threatened several Dallas 6 members with death, inmates Andre Jacobs, Carrington Keys, Duane Peter, Derrick Stanley, Anthony Locke and Anthony Kelly felt they could no longer suffer. Covering their cell door windows with bedding, the prisoners demanded that the abuse stop and requested access to their counsellors, state police, the District Attorney and the Public Defenders’ Office. They had no access to telephones or computers and their incoming and outgoing mail were being destroyed to undermine their ability to expose the corruption. In response, prison officials staged an armed assault against the unarmed men, who were all locked inside of their individual cells, viciously attacking them with electro-shock shields, tasers, their fists, and pepper-spray. While all of the guards involved in the incident admitted that they did not suffer any injuries, members of the Dallas 6 were left bloody, naked, with burnt skin and in pain. Following the assaults, hundreds of documents were generated, including specific claims of misconduct alleged against the Dallas 6. Not once was the word ‘riot’ mentioned. Four months later, after civil actions and other complaints were filed against prison guards and officials regarding the events, the prison, state police, and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office formed an alliance to bring criminal charges against the Dallas 6, now calling the incident a “riot”.

Eric King: a vegan anarchist, was arrested and charged with an attempted 2014 firebombing of a government official’s office in Kansas City, MO. Eric allegedly threw a hammer through a window of the building and then through two lit bottles inside, though both failed to ignite. Eric was identified as a suspect by local police because he had previously come under suspicion for anti-government and anti-police graffiti. Eric is allegedly involved with the the Kansas City Fight Back insurrectionist collective. Update February 2016: Eric is set to sign a non-cooperating plea deal to 10 years in prison on March 3rd.

Herman Bell: a member of the Black Liberation Army, was captured in September 1973 and extradited to New York on charges of having killed two New York City police officers– a case for which Jalil Muntaquim and Nuh Washington were already serving time. No witnesses were able to put Herman at the scene of the crime. The first trial ended in a hung jury but Herman was convicted at his second trial and given a sentence of 25 years to life. Most recently, Herman was indicted as one of the San Francisco 8, 8 former Black Panthers all accused of murdering a police officer in San Francisco in the 1970’s. Herman pleaded guilty to a smaller offence and was not given any additional time to his sentence.

Jason Hammond: arrested outside his home in July 2013, a year after the anti-fascist action that the Tinley Park 5 served time for. He was charged with armed violence and mob action, the same as the other 5 anti-fascists. His indictment states the Tinley Park Police were given a report from the FBI stating that they had identified them from DNAgathered at the scene and a surveillance video from the restaurant where the fascist meeting was shut down. He took a non-cooperating plea agreement on January 22, 2015 and will serve 3.5 years.

Kevin and Tyler: Kevin Olliff (aka Kevin Johnson) and Tyler Lang were indicted under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act for allegedly releasing—and conspiring to release—about 2,000 mink and foxes from Midwest fur farms. They were arrested during the summer of 2013 and took non-cooperating plea deals on state charges of “possession of burglary tools.” Then almost a year later, they were indicted on federal AETA charges. During the summer of 2015, Kevin and Tyler entered into a non-cooperating plea agreements through which they plead guilty to violating the AETA. Kevin was sentenced to 36 months and has now been released from prison and moved into a halway house in May 2016. Tyler was sentenced to 3 months of time served, plus 6 months on home detention and 6 months in a halfway house.

Kyle Peterson: a trans man, who was born and lived in Southern Georgia. On October 28th 2011, Ky was a victim of a viscious sexual assault by a total stranger who happened upon him as he was walking home from a convenience store. During the attack Ky fought back against his attacker and accidentally caused a lethal wound to the attacker. Ky was arrested for murder, but was not treated for his injuries. At his 1st appearance, he pleaded Not Guilty with a Sumter County Public Defender. After that, he was returned to the county jail where he sat for a year with no word from a single person about his case. 1 year later, a public defender appeared and offered Ky a plea “bargain” of 20 years with 15 years to serve.

Luke O’Donovan: On New Year’s Eve of 2013, Luke O’Donovan attended a house party in Atlanta, Georgia. Luke was insulted with homophobic slurs, and attacked by several people at once. Luke unsuccessfully attempted to escape, at which point several witnesses reported watching between 5 and 12 men ganging-up on Luke and stomping on his head and body, evidently with the intent to kill him. Luke was called a faggot before and during the attack. Throughout the course of the attack, Luke and five others were stabbed. Luke was subsequently imprisoned and charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as well as one count of attempted murder. None of the other individuals involved in the altercation were charged. Luke will be in prison for 2 years beginning on August 12 2014, after which he will begin eight years of harsh probation. The judge added to the negotiated plea that Luke will be banished from the state of Georgia for the eight years of his probation.

Marius Mason: a long-time activist in the environmental and labor movements. In March 2008, he was arrested by federal authorities for charges related to two acts of property destruction that occurred in 1999 and 2000; no one was injured in either of them. He accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced on February 5, 2009 to just under 22 years. He is now serving the longest sentence of any “Green Scare” prisoner.

Nicole Kissane: In July, 2015, Nicole was indicted under the federal Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). The indictment cites specific vandalism of fur stores and the liberation of thousands of mink and other fur-bearing animals, claiming that Nicole, along with her co-defendant Joseph
Buddenberg, released mink and vandalized businesses that used animal
products throughout the summer and fall of 2013; drove over 40,000
miles to free almost 7,000 mink from farms in Iowa, Pennsylvania,
Wisconsin, and Minnesota; and did more than $400,000 worth of damage.
In early 2016, both signed non-cooperating plea agreements and pleaded
guilty to conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.
Just recently, Nicole was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison.

Nato 3: arrested on May 16, 2012 in the lead up to the anti-NATO protests in Chicago, Illinois. In January 2014 they were found guilty of possession of an incendiary device with the intent to commit arson, possession of an incendiary device with the knowledge that another intended to commit arson and mob action. They were given sentences ranging from 5 to 8 years. In November 2014, Brian Church was released on parole and in May 2015 Brent Betterly was also released. UPDATE DECEMBER 2015: In October of 2014, Chase wrote to several supporters, “I am a transgender woman,” asking to be referred to as Maya Chase. In accordance with these stated wishes, supporters spread the word in blogs and via social media that Chase’s preferred name was Maya and pronouns were feminine. In a more recent letter, however, dated September 21, 2015, Chase explicitly requested that his legal name and male pronouns be used once again to identify him: “Also let me apologize for rushing so much in my last letter [that] I didn’t get to explain the sudden change of names. After a lot of thinking I’ve decided even though I am Bi/TS/GQ, I don’t think I want to spend the rest of my life as a Woman 24/7. So you can refer to me in mascul[ine] terms.” Letters from that date forward have been signed using “Jared” or “Jay.”

Robert Seth Hayes: a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, he was framed and convicted of murdering a NYC police officer in 1973. Romaine ‘Chip’ Fitzgerald: born and raised in Compton, California, as a teenager joined the Southern California Chapter of the Black Panther Party. In September 1969, Chip was wounded and arrested in connection with a police shoot-out. He was tried for assault on police and other, related charges, including the murder of a security guard. He was convicted and sentenced to death, aged 19 years old.

Russell Maroon Shoatz: a dedicated community activist and founding member of the Philadelphia based organisation Black Unity Council, which eventually merged with the Black Panther Party (1969). In 1970, along with five others, Russell was accused of attacking a police station, which resulted in an officer being killed. This attack was said to have been carried out in response to rampant police brutality in the Black community. For 18 months, Russell functioned underground as a soldier in the Black Liberation Army, but was captured in 1972. Twice he escaped—once in 1977 and again 1980, but both times he was recaptured and today he is held in a control unit in Pennsylvania where he is serving multiple life sentences.

Sean Swain: held without legal conviction or sentence since 1991 for the self-defense killing of a court official’s relative who broke into Sean’s home and threatened his life. In fall of 2012, prisoners calling themselves the Army of the 12 Monkeys (A12M) got rowdy at Mansfield Correctional, and the prison authorities assumed “that anarchist” Sean Swain must have been behind it and threw him in supermax isolation. Sean denies any involvement or affiliation with the A12M and is in the process of suing the ODRC for targeting him based exclusively on his ideology and political speech.

Veronza Bowers: was a member of the Black Panther Party and was convicted of the murder of a US Park Ranger, on the basis of two government informants’ testimonies, both of whom received reduced sentences for other crimes by the federal prosecutor’s office. There were no eye-witnesses and no evidence independent of these informants to link him to the crime. At his trial, Veronza offered an alibi in his testimony, which was not credited by the jury. Nor were the testimonies of two relatives of the informants who insisted that they were lying. The informants had all charges against them in this case dropped and one was given $10,000 by the government, according to the prosecutor’s post-sentencing report. Veronza has consistently proclaimed his innocence of the crime he never committed, even at the expense of having his appeals for parole denied, for which an admission of guilt is virtually required.
